Sonja Hunt (Burbela)
While at home surrounded by her loving family, Sonja Marie Hunt, 63, was reunited in Heaven with her parents and beloved dog Ginger on Tuesday, September 11, 2018.
Born in East Orange, her family relocated to Trenton (where she attended Junior 2) and then to Hamilton Square (where she graduated from Steinert High School). After graduating from Trenton State College, she began her career as a teacher in the Hamilton Township School District via Klockner School, where she taught 4th grade for over three years before taking a hiatus to raise a family.
With her husband, Bill, they raised their two sons in Robbinsville since 1991. After they went off to school, she jumped head first back into teaching. For the next 26 years she taught with the East Windsor School District at the Grace N. Rogers Elementary School, where she inspired countless students to be their best. During her time at Grace N. Rogers, Sonja was frequently nominated for “Teacher of the Year” and winning twice. She was the first teacher to receive the honor as a non-tenured teacher in the district. Additionally, Sonja received multiple grants for programs that she initiated in the district, many of which continue to this day. Her passion for education continued through her involvement many extracurricular events and as Student Counsel Advisor for many years. She was a member of the NJEA and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Women Educators.
Outside of school, Sonja loved going to the beach. She spent countless hours at her second home in Belmar collecting seashells, sea glass, or just enjoying the ocean. A lifelong interest in photography brought her to Instagram, where she loved sharing nature pictures with her 1000+ followers. She always loved going on new adventures, visiting new places, and travelling to new destinations. Her excitement about the world was contagious. She enjoyed hosting family and friends for the holidays, where everything was meticulously planned out so everyone could have an incredible time.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, niece, and friend to many. Daughter of the late John and Maria (Zajac) Burbela; Sonja is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, William “Bill” R. Hunt Jr.; her two beloved sons, Christopher W. Hunt and his fiancée Marianne Solorzano, and her youngest Stephen D. Hunt; her brother, Walter Burbela and his fiancée Cheryl Ferrando; her sister, Mary and husband Dean Santos; two brothers-in-law, Richard W. Hunt and Gregg M. Hunt and wife Donna; her mother-in-law, Dorothy “Dottie” A. Hunt; an uncle, Nestor Burbela; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, September 17, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1195 Deutz Ave., Trenton, NJ 08611. Burial will follow. Family and friends may call Sunday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Monday morning from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM at the Hamilton Brenna-Cellini Funeral Home, 2365 Whitehorse-Mercerville Rd., Hamilton, NJ 08619. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to “The Sonja M.
