Obituary

Gerard “Jerry” Gentilella, a veteran of World War II and long-time employee in the textile industry, a born and raised New Yorker and recent New Jersey resident, a loving son, brother, and uncle, has died. He was 96.

Born in Staten Island, NY, on January 30, 1923, Jerry spent most of his long life in New York City where he lived, worked, and volunteered for more than 70 years. He was a child of the Depression and though his family was poor, he describes his childhood as being some of his “best years.” He served in the Army during World War II and was among the first of many men to storm the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1943, receiving a distinguished Service Medal in 2016. Jerry worked in the textile industry for more than thirty years and after retiring, spent many years volunteering as a an X-ray delivery person for Manhattan hospitals and medical offices. Jerry moved to Hightstown, NJ, fifteen years ago and has lived there ever since.

Jerry was always active, physically and intellectually, walking for miles a day, even into his eighties, and remaining an active reader and lover of libraries to the end. He questioned everything and was always delighted when someone had the answers he was looking for. He loved good conversation with family and friends and was always especially interested in, and happy to spend time with, his young nieces and nephews (and great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews).

Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Maria Gentilella, his seven siblings, Teresina (Tessie), Carmela (Molly), Angelo, Nicolina (Nikki), Anthony, Mary, and Florence, and his niece, Angela Cucciniello and her husband Joseph. He is survived by a nephew, James D’Elia and his wife Joy; two nieces, Denise Lindsey and Andrea McGuire, and her husband, Scott; as well as several generations of nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 3pm to 6pm on Sunday, February 17th and from 8am to 9am on Monday, February 18th at the Brenna-Cellini Funeral Home, 2365 Whitehorse-Mercerville Rd, Hamilton Township, NJ 08619. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday morning at 10am at St. Gregory The Great Catholic Church, 4620 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ 08690. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jerry's memory to Meals on Wheels of Mercer County, 320 Hollowbrook Dr, Ewing Township, NJ or Interfaith Caregivers of Mercer County, 3635 Quakerbridge Road, Hamilton Township, NJ.
