Obituary

Edwin Michael Burns, 72, passed away on December 14, 2020, at Samaritan Hospice in Voorhees, NJ. Edwin was retired from the State of New Jersey, where he was a devoted social worker for over 30 years. Edwin helped many families through his work as a supervisor at the Department of Children and Families, and Medicaid. He had many lifelong friends and his dog, Rocky, was always by his side.

Edwin was a proud athlete, and tennis was his passion. He enjoyed playing competitively, traveling for tournaments, and teaching others how to play. He had a particular passion for horse racing and always knew where to place a good bet.

Independent, smart, and funny, Edwin split his time between Key Largo, Florida, and Medford, New Jersey. He loved the beach and spent as much time as he could there. Edwin enjoyed listening to records and driving to B101 radio. He cried during most movies and always had the latest newspaper on him.

Edwin is survived by his daughters, Faith Branstetter, Amelia Burns, and step-daughter, Alexandra McCormick. He was loved by his three sisters, Kathy Linburn, Beth Burns and wife Gayle Reedy, and Susan Burns, his nieces and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Alice (McDade) Burns.

Cremation will be held privately and is under the direction of the Hamilton Brenna-Cellini Funeral Home, 2365 Whitehorse-Mercerville Rd., Hamilton, NJ 08619. Burial of cremated remains will occur at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Cedar Ln., Hamilton, NJ. We admired your passion for things you believed in....tennis, Rocky, politics, Phillies, Eagles, Civil War and history. Bill will miss your talks about the civil war while Cathy and I danced. As well your talks at O'Conner's dinners in NJ. We will both miss talking sports with you whenever we got together. Such fond memories from Key Largo, the annual poker bike ride, the way you bucked me up when down on myself during tennis and let's not forget your chanting 'oooommm' as you walked by our yoga group. We will cherish our memories. We will miss you very much.

Missing you Sandy. . . so many memories (who knew?) tennis - with both good knees and bad; swimming - meeting by the fence, learning to luxuriate on the hot cement; dancing - so so much fun with Fran and Bill and you were always such a good sport; hugging - close and tight; laughing- not enough but oh so genuinely joyful; playing cards - Pitch (called something else in NJ, teaching you cribbage and, of course, your Cape Cod sweatshirt, camino Skyping, Denny's and the Poker ride! Such sweet memories of special (and ordinary) moments together. . . gone too soon my friend. Love you, Cathy
